joveismad, sorry for hijacking your forum topic, but I thought we could put all the different 'versions' of missions in one place. I believe we can mash them together and come out with a mission statement that reflects all our views. Then again, do any of these actually say something different or does it all just come down to semantics?

Lloyd's (John/Mitchell Remix) submission
Submitted by phoolish on Fri, 11/11/2005 - 12:52pm.
We feel that the current and past economic models -- and their
real-life expected implementations -- have done more harm than good on
this world and for humanity, and have often stifled the exploration of
genuinely positive economic alternatives.
We feel that, with regards to the economic sphere, humanity can do
better, and we think that the model of participatory economics
("parecon"), as formalized by Michael Albert and Robin Hahnel, is a
step in the right direction.
The Chicago Area Participatory
Economics Society (CAPES) mission is to educate ourselves and others to
build the institutions, values, tools and support for the creation of a
self-sustaining participatory economy.
As our name suggests, we count our primary focus on the Chicago area, but we do not limit ourselves to the Chicago area.
We encourage and invite everyone interested to take part.

Remix
Submitted by joveismad on Sun, 11/13/2005 - 8:04pm.
Hey, folks - the post above with concerns about Mitchell's draft, though I forgot to log in, is mine. I posted it to the CAPES listserv list a few days back and Lloyd asked me to forward it here. I haven't seen any responses to the specific criticisms yet, and I'd like to see some or else I wouldn't have posted them.
.
I'd also like specific criticisms on the other proposed mission statement up top, on which there's been complete silence. If it's unsatisfactory, I'd like to know why so I can post an amended version that can compete with/be combined with Mitchell's, and also bring it to Tuesday's meeting.
.
Although I'm fond of neither, I greatly prefer Mitchell's first draft to the "John/Mitchell remix." The detailed and numbered section in the middle was the part of Mitchell's statement which I felt might be preferable to the statement I proposed.

Again we agree, my rendition

Again we agree, my rendition was the poorest of the three and that yours is the most concise, but I would first like to offer these citicisms.

Lloyd, great edits: your paragraph three edits are dead-on and the rest are all points worth debating.
.
I think we could compromise on the strict Chicago focus if language were changed to make clear that Chicago was our main but not sole priority. "In Chicago (and hopefully also throughout the world)" or something like that.
.
And I personally think at least some of paragraph two is worth keeping, although I'm not married to that: Capitalism and coordinatorism aren't just "targets," they're what we'll most likely get mistaken for and part of stating our mission is distinguishing it from the mission of other groups where confusion is probable. I'd keep all of it, but this paragraph is of course the easiest to cut.
.
Again, thanks.

Problems with the first

Problems with the first draft of the John/Mitchell remix:

First of all, I would like

First of all, I would like to thank you for taking the time to write a mission statement. As you correctly identified in your email, there is still a minority of the member population posting to the site. It will change as we get more refined ideas of organization.
I agree that emotion should be removed from the mission statement. Not because we don't feel, but because it's not about feeling, it's about facts. I disagree with your second statement, capitalism did cause more harm then good, but it was a necessary evolutionary step to get us to this point. With that in mind, I suggest revising all mission statements by removing the statements about past forms of economic organization, it suits no end other then to point out targets. It doesn't promote the model of Parecon.

I'm fine with it

I think this works well for a mission statement - it's not too large, direct, to the point.

Should we go with this?

This is a good revision, once I take another look at this.
Maybe we should go with this as the CAPES mission statement?
What do we think? Agree? Disagree?

** DRAFT ONLY ** DO NOT (YET) DISTRIBUTE **
The Chicago Area Participatory Economics Society (CAPES) mission statement.
We feel that the current and past economic models -- and their
real-life expected implementations -- have done more harm than good on
this world and for humanity, and have stifled the exploration of
genuinely positive economic alternatives.
We feel that, with regards to the economic sphere, humanity
can do better,
and we think that the model of participatory economics ("parecon"), as
formalized by Michael Albert and Robin Hahnel, is a step in the right
direction.
We count our mission as follows:
(1) To investigate the model of participatory economics, both in theory and in practice.
(2) To implement the model as far as possible.
(3) To critique the model and our implementations of the model,
and offer suggestions for improving both the model and our
implementations -- holding dear the values borne by the model.
(4) To promote the model -- in teachings, presentations, and other means of creative expression.
(5) To support those who are implementing the model, and encourage those who are exploring the model.
As our name suggests, we count our primary focus on the Chicago area, but we do not limit ourselves to the Chicago area.
We encourage and invite everyone interested to take part.
